LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Car Company Critics Should Face The Same
Posted on: Oct 27, 2009 @ 04:33:34 pm (2 Editors' response)

BREMERTON

Why are Republicans saying \"Don\'t buy GM or Chrysler cars\"? How un-American can you get?

I haven\'t heard Republicans advocating a boycott of Wall Street companies that took bailout cash. What say we boycott companies that took that money? Let\'s dump Chase, J. P. Morgan, AIG, the subprime mortgage companies, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and those Wall Street companies bailed out by the Bush Administration because \"they\'re too big to allow to fail.\"

Any company that is \"too big to fail\" is a monopoly and should be...

ar-Oriented Mean-Field Theory for Traffic Flow Models (1997)
Posted on: Oct 27, 2009 @ 04:31:48 pm (No Editors' response)

We present a new analytical description of the cellular automaton model for singlelane traffic. In contrast to previous approaches we do not use the occupation number of sites as dynamical variable but rather the distance between consecutive cars. Therefore certain longer-ranged correlations are taken into account and even a mean-field approach yields non-trivial results. In fact for the model with v_max = 1 the exact solution is reproduced. For v_max = 2 the fundamental diagram shows a good agreement with results from simulations.

Cars need to stop for pedestrians in crosswalk
Posted on: Oct 27, 2009 @ 01:32:27 pm (4 Editors' response)

I've become one of those embarrassing moms. Almost every morning I find myself yelling and signaling to ignorant drivers the presence of a crosswalk while my son and I wait to cross. It's illegal and, in general, extremely rude not to stop for pedestrians waiting to cross.

Every morning I walk my son to Perrine. Every day I'm shocked to see cars whizzing past as we're standing there waiting to cross. One morning eight cars passed by before someone stopped to allow us to cross. Of all people one of the cars passing by was a teacher at the neighboring junio...

Cars don't belong in Thompson bicycle
Posted on: Oct 27, 2009 @ 11:29:02 am (2 Editors' response)

I'm writing to you about a growing problem on Thompson Lane and other areas of Murfreesboro. I don't think most people realize that it's illegal to pass on the right in a bike lane. Recently on the way to work, I passed my husband, who is an avid biker, on his way to the greenway. After I stopped four cars behind someone who was turning into Riverview, my husband passed me and was almost hit by, not one, but two cars who felt like it was their God-given right to get to work 30 seconds faster.

Now I realize that I'm a little emotional about this particular instance, but my whole fami...

The April 23rd issue contained a number of articles on the increasing interest in making the campus an enviro/green friendly place with one headline declaring, "sustainability ideas sprouting everywhere."

However, no mention was made in any of these pieces about the most destructive contributor to environmental degradation: cars. A number of years ago I gave up my car in the intere...

Cars and cell phones a dangerous mix
Posted on: Nov 01, 2011 @ 12:00:00 am (1 Editors' response)

Unless you are a surgeon or a pilot, driving a car in traffic is the most complex thing you will ever do. It makes multi-tasking look like watching TV. This is why I regret The Oregonian editorial board opining against cell phone/driving restriction legislation ("Cell phone debate could use hard facts," Feb. 21).

In Tom Vanderbilt's seminal tome "Traffic: Why we drive the way we do," he clearly establishes most of the current science o...
